Havana has virtually no bike paths, no rules for bikes, no bike racks, no infrastructure. Even so, Havana is the Caribbean’s ideal biking city.

Jesse Horst is director of Sarah Lawrence College in Cuba, the longest consecutively running US academic exchange program in Havana. He earned his Ph.D. in Latin American History from the University of Pittsburgh in 2016 and was awarded the University of Pittsburgh’s Eduardo Lozano Memorial Dissertation Prize for best doctoral dissertation in Latin American Studies for 2016-17. His previous work has appeared in the Hispanic American Historical Review and the Journal of Urban History. He is currently finishing a book manuscript on slum clearance in Havana from 1930-1970.
